As a sixth generation Texan, Leslie was born in Waco, and attended both Trinity University in San Antonio and Baylor University in Waco. A very creative person, who spent most of her life in the business world, she longed to be an artist, free of the restraints of corporate America. It wasn't until her friend, Janys, tossed a piece of burlap to her and said "do something with this" that she began to create her Burlies, which became a hit with everyone who saw them. Forming burlap into various shapes, then painting them, she has collectors in the U.S, and internationally. She loves color and the majority of her art is in bright vivid colors, often in combinations that many would never consider putting together. Besides the Burlies, she enjoys doing abstract paintings on canvas.

A native Texan, Janys was born on Galveston Island, and grew up in Waco. After raising 3 sons, she began her sculpting career in the small Texas Panhandle town of McLean. Janys comes by her talent naturally, never having had any formal training in the art of sculpting. She first began by creating Western caricatures, for which she found eager collectors. An international miniaturist commissioned Janys to create the figures for 5 scenes, to be purchased by the Miniatures Museum of Taiwan. Originally, she sculpted 25 figures, including 5 of Alice, for the Alice in Wonderland tree scene. This was followed by 27 figures for Gulliver’s Travels, Cinderella, Snow White, and Jack in the Beanstalk. All of these figures can be seen in the Museum, as well as on the Museum’s web site. Janys entered into the world of African animal sculptures by creating a charging bull elephant. This work is highly acclaimed by fellow artists, and is in a limited edition of 24 bronzes, two of which have been collected by the owners of the Dallas Fine Arts Foundry. Another of these bronzes was auctioned at the 2007 convention of the Houston Safari Club, and another copy was given to the highest donor at the 2014 Dallas Safari Club convention. A commissioned a one-of-a-kind sculpture of a giraffe drinking at a watering hole, is in a private collection in California.
Another bronze is installed on the fifth floor of Waco’s Providence Hospital, in the Women and Newborns Center. This work depicts the undying, unconditional love of a mother for her child, and has become a must–see addition to this facility.
A mammoth attempting to rescue her baby from impending death in a mudslide depicts a moving scene that surely must have occurred thousands of years ago at the Waco Mammoth Site. Janys’ ability to evoke emotion is evident in this sculpture, giving almost identifiable human-quality to this doomed creature.
Having attended Baylor, and inspired by the dominance in academics and athletics, Janys created a standing bear, demonstrating the fierceness and determination of Baylor Nation across the globe.
Janys is renowned for her series of “Portrait Sculptures”. A feather boa, comprised of over 400 sculpted feathers, glowing green bejeweled eyes of Egyptian cats, delicately painted long finger nails, and pensive facial unique creations. Reaction to this series has been that of awe, with immense praise for the artist’s attention to detail.
A meticulous sculptor, who thoroughly studies her subjects before beginning any of her works, Janys delights in surprising observant viewers with subtle humor and the tiniest details. Every aspect of her unparalleled designs continually amazes those who view the works of this creative artist.
Many of her sculptures can be reproduced in life-size or smaller bronzes. Send us an email for additional information.
